BOCA RATON, Fla., — St. Andrews High School student Hannah Speer’s glowing tribute to her soccer coach Tony Stevens has won top honors in a Nike and Nordstrom essay writing contest that attracted over 300 entries from around the country.
Stevens, a former Manchester University Head coach and his team, the Delray Beach Red Hots, will be awarded in a special presentation at Nordstrom Boca Raton Town Center, Saturday, January 29 at 4 p.m. in front of the Kid’s Shoes department, on one.
“Hannah Speer’s essay was selected based on its inspirational nature, clarity of written expression and neatness. As our reward for special coaches who help make their teams faster and better, we’ll be presenting coach Stevens and his team with Nike gym bags, Nike T-Shirts, Nike jackets and sports equipment,” said Pat McGowan, Nordstrom Boca Raton Town Center store manager.
In her essay, 11-year-old Hannah, the youngest player on the U-13 team writes, “I started training with him almost 3 years ago. Over those years I have come to know what Tony (my coach) is all about. He stands out from all other coaches. He doesn’t let parents influence how he teaches our team, but inspires us to become the best players we can with our will and desire. That’s what my coach is all about.”
The presentation is part of a You’re Faster Than You Think celebration at Nordstrom stores which joined with Nike in giving children aged five to twelve-years-old, the opportunity to nominate their coach as the best coach ever.
A senior amateur and semi-professional league player in England and Germany until his career was halted by injury, Stevens has coached youth soccer for over twenty-seven years. He was formerly Head Coach to the nursery team of England’s famed Manchester United. Since relocating to the U.S. in 1983, many universities, colleges, high schools, club teams and individuals have benefited from his training.
