FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Jan. 12 — Securities Fraud Attorney Mark A. Tepper urged paralegals to “pay attention” to identify ponzi schemes like the latest alleged scam by Bernie Madoff. “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” he says.
Explaining and answering questions last week while addressing a gathering of paralegals at the Broward Chapter of the Paralegal Association of Florida in Ft. Lauderdale, Mr. Tepper reminded his audience that “confidence men” who operate ponzi schemes are unflappable and can talk a hound off a meat wagon, which may explain why so many sophisticated
investors were allegedly victimized by Mr. Madoff.
The seminar on Security Investments and Arbitration Claims was organized by the Association’s local chapter, as part of its topics of law for CLE credits. It was attended by some 40 paralegals looking for continuing legal education opportunities in the Broward area.
A former New York Assistant Attorney General and Chief Trial Counsel at the Bureau of Investor Protection and Securities, Mr. Tepper also investigated and prosecuted ponzi schemes. Since establishing his law practice in Fort Lauderdale representing the victims of broker fraud, he addresses professional associations, local clubs and financial organizations in a continuing effort to educate the public on securities fraud.
Mr. Tepper makes audio-visual presentations in connection with a variety of topics concerning Securities Fraud, describing ways in which the public is cheated, educating his audiences on how to protect themselves from fraudulent practices, what legal remedies are available and how professionals can recognize fraud in a client’s investment account.
Presentations are tailored to the needs of each group. Question and answer sessions follow each presentation.
Mr. Tepper is a member of the Speaker’s Bureau of the Florida Bar. He has lectured before the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) which has presented him with an “Outstanding Service Award.” Last year, he organized and presented suitability training for state securities examiners during NASAA’s Broker/Dealer Conference. A member of the Florida, New York and California Bars, Mr. Tepper is AV(R)-rated, the highest rating of lawyers in the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory.
