PGA Tour Legacy Heralds Future of Golf at BallenIsles Junior Cup 2011
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla., Aug. 6 — Golf’s next generation was showcased this weekend when the 2011 BallenIsles Junior Cup teed off August 6-7. The Country Club’s historic championship East Course, where many golf legends originally qualified for the PGA Tour and Jack Nicklaus and Julius Boros won PGA Championships, was the fitting setting for the Ryder Cup format tournament.
24 rising stars of golf competed on day one of the event in a four-ball front nine, followed by foursomes on the back nine. Day two (Aug. 7) featured singles matches on 18 holes.
“It’s very symbolic that BallenIsles’ rich PGA Tour legacy should be the setting for this tournament that presented many of the young names who will help determine the future of the game. We’re rolling out the red carpet for the next generation of golf with this invitation-only event to celebrate the hard work of elite and accomplished junior golfers and to guide them in achieving their full potential,” said Brian Kelley, BallenIsles Director of Golf.
A demo day with Cleveland Golf and Srixon will present the juniors with an opportunity to try the latest in drivers and other equipment. A pairings party at the Club today will determine teams and when they play. Participants will also receive a golf bag, shirts, hats, and golf balls for the event, which are sponsored by Cleveland Golf.
Top juniors include Tequesta’s Hunter O’Mahony, winner of the 57th Florida State Boys Junior Championship and West Palm Beach’s Conor Richardson who came from behind last year to win the Boys Division at the AJGA Palmetto Junior Classic, scoring an even-par-216 tournament total.
Highly regarded for its 3 championship golf courses, where many golf legends originally qualified for the PGA Tour, BallenIsles is also home to a $26 million state-of-the-art Sports Complex that is testimony to the Club’s extraordinary commitment to a healthy member lifestyle. Earlier this year, out of nearly 200 Clubs managed worldwide by Troon Golf, BallenIsles was awarded “Facility of the Year”.
