NEW YORK, June 6 – In a star-studded event attended by some five hundred of fashion’s elite, the Council of Fashion Designers of America has honored fashion icon Stephen Burrows, in recognition of his distinctive artistry and achievements as a fashion designer.

The CFDA’s Board of Director’s Special Tribute Award was presented to Burrows at the CFDA Fashion Awards Gala held last evening at the New York Public Library.

Burrows, who is also credited as the first African-American designer to achieve international acclaim with his signature palate of vibrant colors and an approach to cut and modern silhouettes that has kept him at the forefront of fashion, is set to unveil his Spring Summer collection in the French Fashion Week taking place Oct. 1-9 at Le Carrousel du Louvre in Paris.

“It’s been more than 30 years since Stephen changed the way the world looks at American fashion, when as a young designer, he was invited alongside such names as Bill Blass, Oscar de la Renta, Halston and Anne Klein to show his collection in France with those of French couturiers, on the runway at Versailles,” said Burrows’ Managing Director, John Robert Miller.

“This promises to be a very triumphant return for Stephen and we’re pleased to announce that Martell Cognac has agreed to be one of our proud sponsors when he presents his collection in Paris,” Miller added.

According to Miller, the summer will herald the debut of “SHOP BURROWS” on eBay, and Home Shopping Europe (HSE) will launch a 26-piece collection, “s by Burrows,” next year.

“The timing of the CFDA’s tribute to Stephen is ideal because it also coincides with our launch of two new online vehicles to present to a worldwide audience,” Miller said.

The CFDA Award was presented by three of Burrows’ longtime friends and muses, legendary supermodels Pat Cleveland, Alva Chinn and Bethann Hardison.  Past recipients of the CFDA Award include Tom Ford, Norma Kamali and Oleg Cassini.

Recognized by the American Fashion Industry with a star on New York City’s Fashion Walk of Fame, Stephen Burrows’ distinguished career in fashion also includes three American Fashion Critics’ Annual Coty Awards.
